Will you wake up one day in your old age regretting the choices you made in your relationships.

  • Regretting you didn’t do all you could to save their marriage
  • Regretting the impact the divorce had on the kids
  • Regretting you didn’t act sooner before it was too late

A former palliative nurse Bronnie Ware asked people in their final days of life the question, “What would they change?” and what she found out talking to many dying patients is that their number one regret was:

“I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, without regrets.”

The Poet Oliver Wendell Holmes lamented that “many people die with their music still in them getting ready to live”.

Most of the clients I talk to have a sudden wake-up call and realize their relationships are the key to living a happy satisfied life.

Especially when one partner decides to leave or announces “I’m not in love with you anymore”.

This often prompts their partner to take action to do everything they can to save their marriage so they don’t look back on their life in regret they did nothing.

My wake-up call happened when my sister, Brigid, a nurse, had been suffering with an undiagnosed terminal disease that was causing kidney failure.

I’d been visiting her, talking, laughing and crying while we remembered the good old days.

On April 7, 2011, on my way back home, Mum called to let me know Brigid, was dying. “You better come quickly” was all I needed to hear to turn the car around and head back to her house.

Brigid had been very career-driven, so we hadn’t seen a lot of her over the years. When I asked what life had meant to her, she emphatically stated that what mattered most were her relationships and spending time with her family.

She didn’t want to die and refused to accept it up to her last breath.

She said to me, “Just be happy and remember family is the most important thing Grant”.

When Brigid knew she was nearing the end of her life she spent the last months deeply valuing the people in her life.

Please don’t wait to tell your loved ones how much you love them, and all the things you want to say to them in a eulogy.
