Couples work with Grant and Christine Wattie

Find out what the same fight is really about. Ninety minutes, both of you, with Grant or Christine.

You each do a two-minute diagnostic before you arrive. In the room, both of you are heard properly. Within two days you have a written plan.

If you are unsure, start with the ten minutes. Or jump in and book one of the packages.

The ninety-minute session is a great place for a couple to start: to fully understand your current situation and how you both want things to be, then map out a game plan going forward.

If you are already both committed and want the best value, the six-session programme includes our Love Without Limits programme to reinforce your learning as we go. In our experience it is the option with the best chance of success.

Couples work fails when there is no consistency and no plan. It is like rolling a boulder uphill: it rolls back down as soon as you stop pushing. The plan aims to get you to the top with a consistent, focused approach.

Sessions are with Grant or Christine. The intensive is with Grant and Christine. Same price online or in person.

Is this right for you?

A strong fit if

  • You keep having the same fight and neither of you can say why.
  • You run a business or a family enterprise together and the work has crept into the marriage.
  • One of you is pulling away and the other is holding on.
  • Something has happened, an affair or a betrayal, and you want to know whether it can be repaired.
  • You have tried counselling that went nowhere and want someone who will say what they see.

Not the right first step if

  • There is physical violence or threats in the relationship. Safety comes first and we will say where to go.
  • One of you has already decided to leave and wants us to deliver the news.
  • There is an active, untreated addiction. That needs its own help before couples work can hold.

The free call is where we check this, honestly, in both directions.

Why ninety minutes, then a path

Ninety minutes is long enough for both of you to be heard and for Grant or Christine to read the pattern back to you. After that, each follow-up has a job: one module of the method, one thing to practise, a note afterwards. The series ends with your agreements in writing, so you know when you are done.

One session stands on its own. Nothing more is expected. The written plan after it will say what we think you need, including if it is nothing more.

How it works

BeforeTwo minutes each

You each complete a short diagnostic, separately. We read both before we meet you, and the book arrives in your inbox.

First sessionHeard, then named

Each of you speaks without interruption. Then we name the pattern you keep getting caught in, and what sits underneath it.

BetweenOne thing to practise

A written plan within two days: what you are working on, what you agreed, and what to practise next. A check-in by message if you are in the programme.

AfterAgreements in writing

The work ends with one page in your own words, signed by both of you. Follow-ups after that are yours to book, not expected.

Investment

Sessions and prices

Every option includes Same Two. New Love., the book, digital, to keep, plus the material listed under it. Pay by card in your own currency, then pick your time from our calendar. Card payment at booking; nothing is billed to insurance. No session carries a guarantee. You get our full attention and an honest read, and the written plan will say if we think you need nothing more.

What happens in the first session
  • Before you arrive, each of you does the Pattern Diagnostic. Two minutes, separately. We read both first.
  • In the room, each of you is heard without interruption. Then your pattern is read back to you both: who goes Tiger, who goes Turtle, and what sits under the arguments.
  • What still works, named out loud, so there is something to build on.
  • A written plan within two days: what we saw and what we recommend next, whether that is more sessions, the programme, the intensive, or nothing more.
  • Same Two. New Love., the book, digital, to keep.
  • Follow-ups after this are one hour, NZ$295, booked one at a time. STOP2GO, the sixty-second reset, comes with the first follow-up.
  • Online: confidential, on Google Meet. One screen between you is fine; sit together.
  • In person: rooms in Havelock North village. Address and parking are in your confirmation.
  • Move or cancel up to 48 hours before at no charge.

Our own method

Both of you leave knowing what to do next, not just what went wrong.

Most couples do not want to fix version one, because it is not working. The work is version two: the conversations to see whether you both want the same future, and the agreements that make it work. We trained for two people in the room, then built our own way of doing it. The Wattie Method, worked out over twenty years and more than 10,000 sessions, and written down in four books. The programme above is the method, one module a session.

  • Trained in Gottman, Imago and EFT, the three best-known approaches to couples work, and in 3D Relational Simulation with Dr Carlos Raimundo.
  • Certified Professional Counsellors, trained at a family therapy centre in New Zealand.
  • Married 44 years, and nearly lost it once. Every tool on this page was used on us first.

The method, in plain words

Tiger and Turtle

When you are triggered you default to fight or flight. One of you is the tiger, the other goes into their shell like the turtle, and nothing gets resolved. Naming which is which, in the room, changes what happens next time.

Stop first, then come back

When either of you is triggered, you stop and walk away, and you both agreed in advance that you would. Then you come back and talk without the conflict. STOP2GO is the sixty-second version of that, for the moment it is needed.

From expectations to agreements

"You never make me a cup of tea" is an expectation, and expectations do not work. "Would you be willing to make me one when you make yourself one?" is a request, and a request can become an agreement. The work moves every frustration from the first kind to the second, and ends with one page in your own words, signed by both of you.

One couple, in their own words

"Both Gaynor and myself decided that we desired our already good 10-year marriage to be a GREAT marriage. We now have a far better idea of who we are as individuals and as a couple."

Greg and Gaynor, 2024

Times and time zones

We work New Zealand daytime, Tuesday to Friday. New Zealand mornings are the afternoon or evening before in North America, and New Zealand afternoons are the middle of the day in Australia and Singapore. The booking page shows every time in your own time zone.

Questions

Is this counselling, therapy or mentoring?
In New Zealand and Australia we work as Certified Professional Counsellors. In the United States and Canada we are not licensed therapists and do not offer therapy. There we work as mentors in our own method, the Wattie Method.
Do we see both of you?
Sessions are with one of us, Grant or Christine, and you choose when you book. The two of us together is the two-day intensive.
How many sessions will we need?
Most couples do the first session and then decide. The six-session programme is the whole method. The written plan after session one will say which we think you need, including if it is nothing more.
What if my partner will not come?
Book an individual session on your own. It is an hour with one of us, for the partner who wants to save it when the other one will not come yet. Many couples start the other way round too: an hour each on your own, then the session together, which is the Fast Start.
What does it cost, and is GST included?
The first session is NZ$450, follow-ups NZ$295, the Fast Start (two individual hours and the session together) NZ$997, the six-session programme NZ$1,497 with Love Without Limits included, an individual session NZ$295. New Zealand couples pay GST on top and get a GST invoice. Couples outside New Zealand pay the same number in their own currency and no GST. Card payment at booking. The intensive is priced on the call.
What makes working with you different?

The conversation in the room is only part of the work.

Before we meet, you each complete a short diagnostic so we can begin with an understanding of what brings you here. During your ninety-minute session, we hear both of you, identify the pattern you keep getting caught in and practise a different way through it.

Within two working days, you receive a written plan: what you are working on, what you have agreed and what to practise next. The book helps you return to the work at home.

A good session matters. So does Tuesday evening, when the same disagreement starts again. We want you to know what to do in that moment. That is what we build the work around.

Can we move or cancel a session?
Yes, up to 48 hours before at no charge. Inside 48 hours the session is charged, because the time was held for you.
There has been an affair. Is this still the right place?
Yes, and book the in-depth assessment rather than the first session. Two hours is what it takes to get under the event to the pattern that produced it, and the written plan will say honestly whether we think it can be repaired.
What happens on the free call?
Ten minutes on Google Meet with Grant or Christine. You say what is happening, we say what we would do with it, and you both check whether it is a fit. If you want the intensive, this is where it is priced.

Who you will be working with

Grant and Christine Wattie

A husband-and-wife team, married 44 years, who work directly with couples. They help couples in crisis, and they specialise in couples who run a business together. They see couples in person in Havelock North, New Zealand, and online around the world.

They sold a photography business, trained as counsellors at New Zealand's first family therapy centre, and spent the next twenty years and more than 10,000 sessions on the work that nearly losing each other had shown them mattered most. Grant is the author of Love Without Limits, The Phoenix Protocol, Same Two. New Love. and For Richer.

You do not have to decide today.

Ten minutes with one of us, no charge, and you will know whether this is the right place. If it is not, we will say where to go instead.
